Let me just say that I am so glad we didn't miss this. We are quietly sitting in our "flat" having experienced our first day of Ramadan...when Boom! boom! vibrates thru the room....2 blocks away, on the beach, are the biggest set of fireworks we have ever seen. Yep. bigger than Kaboom town, or Fair Park... They were set up in four different locations on the beach...and set off in sync. If we weren't standing there watching them we might have thought we were getting bombed. No kidding. It was beautiful and loud. Poor westerners...we stood there with our mouths hanging opened. It was so fun. Ryan did notice that there was no red, white and blue. :)
Things were very quiet for most of the day. Restaurants are closed until dusk. People stay inside during the day and then come out at nite. Stores are opened until 3 am. It is almost like a month long Christmas day. Gifts are exchanged...nite after nite of family and friends and food. Very interesting and we are learning a lot. We have been told that toward the end of the month people are very irritable. It is hot so I imagine that adds to the irritation. Ryan's school hours are from 8:30 until 2pm. Mike came home at 3. For the whole month everything runs on a shortened schedule.
Will keep you posted on what we learn and experience this month.
Miss you all.
